Rumpelstiltskin
Retold and illustrated by: Paul Zelinsky
From the German of the Brothers Grimm
When a poor farmer
tells the king that his daughter is able to spin straw into gold, the king asks
for the daughter to spin him gold or she will die. The daughter, who does not
know how to spin straw into gold becomes worried. Just then, a small man enters
and spins the straw in gold, but at the cost of her valuable goods. She even
risk giving the man her future child. When she does have a child, the man wants
it, unless she can guess his name. She guesses his name, and everybody lives
happily ever after.
Rating/evaluation:
like other stories, this teaches a lesson
through the use of fairy tales. The lesson would be that of not to lie. In addition,
do not agree to do something if you cannot handle the consequences.

The author/illustrator of this version came to my Elementary school when I was a student. It was really neat since he won a Caldecott honor.
